Father’s Day History
Father’s Day was first celebrated on 5 July 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Its credit goes to the hard work and the strong determination of the well-known lady, Grace Golden Clayton. The main purpose of this activity was to give honor to all hundreds of fathers who killed in the mine explosion in Monongah in 1907. At that time, Father’s Day did not get any attention from many peoples. As it was not promoted and there was no proper source at that time for its awareness and campaign. So this event did not get fame like other major celebrations to held every year.
Its first attempt was not successful, as few people knew about it. But it got public attention when Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington was inspired by this idea to celebrate this day as a proper holiday. According to the source, her father, William Jackson Smart, was a farmer and Civil War veteran. He raised his family of six children including Sonora by his himself alone. As his wife died during the birth of their youngest son in 1898. His name is not mentioned but his birth makes their father alone. Sonora got an idea regarding Father’s Day when she was attending Mother’s day ceremony at the Church in 1909.
After this, 27 years old Sonora was able to convince the Spokane Ministerial Association and YMCA to celebrate Father’s Day as a proper public holiday. Otherwise, set its date to any Sunday in June to celebrate this event. She proposed 5 June as it was her father’s date of birth, but it was rejected and the ministers selected the third Sunday of June. The main reason behind the third Sunday of June was to provide more time after Mother’s Day. As Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and people need more time for preparation. In 1910, Father’s Day was celebrated on 19 June and Sonora delivered presents to all disabled fathers.
Gradually, Father’s Day became famous and in 1916 it was personally celebrated by President Woodrow Wilson and his family. In 1928, the resolution of Father’s Day was signed by President Calvin Coolidge. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared its official day of observance, which is the third Sunday of June every year. In 1972, President Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day as a National Holiday.
