The actual history of the Mother’s Day starts from the ancient Greeks and Romans. As they celebrate this event in the honor of their Goddess mothers, Rhea and Cybele. But there is no exact record of a specified era is available. And the recent history of the Mother’s Day starts from the early Christian festival, Mothering Sunday.
Mothering Sunday was celebrated in the United Kingdom and the several parts of Europe on the Fourth Sunday in Lent. This event was directly connected to the main church of the Christians and it was celebrated as a religious Pilgrim. But with the passage of time, it became a part of a secular world also and changes into a full day holiday. However, it is not a federal holiday as shops are open and close like any normal Sunday. But this event has its own importance as it appreciates the parenthood of mothers.
Mothering Sunday became renowned after its merger with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. As its celebration starts a year before the Civil War. In that era, Ann Reeves Jarvis became famous due to Mother’s Day. She started to teach local women how to care for their children by starting the “Mother’s Day Work Clubs”. After this, she arranged Mother’s Friendship Day in 1868. The main purpose of Mother’s Friendship Day was to gather mother with former Union and associated soldiers to promote reconciliation.
Julia Ward Howe is also very famous due to her hard work for Mother’s Day. She was an abolitionist and suffragette and she became famous due to “Mother’s Day Proclamation”. It is also known as Appeal to womanhood throughout the world, as it was an appeal to mothers to unite in promotion of world peace. She also organized Mother’s Peace Day in 1873 to be celebrated on 2nd June every year.
Mother’s Day is the worldwide event now that has been celebrated in all religions and regions around the world with slight changes. Every country celebrates Mother’s Day according to their custom and traditions. Mother’s Day is celebrated on 2nd May in several countries like USA, Canada, European Countries, New Zealand, Australia, India Japan, China, South Africa, and Phillippines. The peoples of the UK and Ireland celebrates Mother’s Day on the 4th Sunday in Lent. And it is celebrated in Thailand every year in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit.
Arab countries celebrate this day on 21st March (vernal equinox) and several European countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 8th (Women’s Day).
