“Lucy” is a tune written and carried out by Julian Lennon, James Scott Cook and Todd Meagher. The tune is a quasi-follow-up to The Beatles’ “Lucy within the Sky with Diamonds”, initially impressed by a drawing by a then four-year-old Lennon given to his father. The drawing was impressed by Lucy Vodden, a toddler pal of Lennon, and this tune is devoted to her.
Lennon contacted his childhood pal Lucy later in life, and discovered she had contracted the auto-immune illness lupus which she ultimately died from. A portion of the proceeds from gross sales of the tune and the EP launch went to 2 lupus charities, St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust (www.lupus.org.uk) within the United Kingdom and the Lupus Foundation of America.
Lennon and Cook appeared on CBS’s The Early Show on 16 December 2009 to debut the tune. In the interview with co-anchor Harry Smith, Lennon revealed his authentic drawing depicting Lucy “bought misplaced. So the way it was discovered or who might have taken it, I do not know, nevertheless it’s now been re-found and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd has it and kindly allowed us to make use of a duplicate of it for the artwork work” for “Lucy.””
